In sociology we talked about how language perpetuates structures, I know I talked about how language predetermines gender role but now I am referring to societal structures in general. What I want to discuss if anyone would like to join me is, if language perpetuates structures then would structures change if language changed?
Well, assuming you mean society's structure, then yes, to some extent. If you meant the structure of language (grammar), society might also change, considering the culture differences between Eastern and Western peoples based upon language development.
ReplyDeleteHow would language have to change to change societal structures? Maybe we would have to eliminate all terms that segregate people. In other words, no more adjectives. Or multiple nouns. Everything is now just a "thing".
Of course, that's an outrageous solution, akin to the "womyn" controversy. I don't think that it would even be reasonable to change language now. We will have to use language more effectively for peace and balance.
So would you suggest mass production of new words over mass elimination of those we already have? I will try to think of a better way to say this but it is not coming to me right now, but yeah, I guess we can go with this for now, I will try to think of a better way to say it by midnight-ish Tuesday/Wednesday, who knows which it will be.
