I get a lot of the ideas for the things that I blog from my sociology class that I am taking through PSEO. I find sociology to a very strange 'science'. Anyway the chapter we are on is titled Stratification of Gender. I find it interesting that sociologists use both the term sex and the term gender, but what is interesting about this, in my opinion, is that sociologists do not truly consider the terms to be synonyms. When sociologists use the term sex they talk about the biological aspects of a person that determines whether one is a male or female. But, when sociologists use the term gender they talk about the socially learned behaviers, attitudes, and expectations that we equate with being male or female. So someone could be male in terms of sex and be more female in terms of gender, in terms of sociology, or that is the way that the professor described it. I find this to be quite an interesting notion, for if the barriers that create the stratification between sex and gender were broken down so many social constructs would also be broken down.
Gender identity, the awareness of being male or female, could be altered, or eliminated, and then gender roles could potentially be eliminated as a result. And, if gender roles were eliminated a set of microagressions and prejudice would be eliminated and women would be equals in society and their ideas would be valued as much as everyone elses (the valued ideas part sounds bad but I am talking about what we have been talking about in IB English, like marginalization). Plus this could affect the way in which children are raised, since the relationships between mother and daughter, mother and son, father and daught, and father and son all vary based on many variables, and studies have been done that show that even the wording of cards regarding the arrival of a new born vary based on gender but also things like what parents say to their children and how much attention and the way in which they raise their children vary based on gender. So if this difference was removed there would be the potential for mroe similarities between males and females in terms of actions and as a result there could be more understanding, although it might not necessarily be the case. But then people would find somehting else to separate people most likely. Also this would change media significantly and product as well. I feel like I am rambling at this point but it I find this really interesting, and I will probably add more or change it, who knows, but yeah thanks for reading this if you do.
