personally, the phrase "playing God" has the connotation: People trying to take the role and acting as if they are God. Like making judgements,claiming to be the god of of a certain talent, skill or activity. There one thing as being good or great at what one does and another like being the God of something. To be the God of anything one have to create it and have the up-most knowledge of its very existence and even that does make the god of that activity.
The sentiment of deciding destiny, creating life, or judging people is the same regardless of your theistic outlook. Or is it? (nice title)
