Emil Durkheim posed the question: "is suicide a private act?" He collected data for seven years from which he established many trends pertaining to suicide. One of which was that suicide is more common in those whose social ties are either too strong or too weak. Another was that suicide is more common in times of peace. I think these trends are interesting to think about especially why they are that way.
I considered doing a study on suicide rates in various regions at various times, but thought it to be morbid and depressing. However, it is fascinating to see the connections between people who do this to themselves.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately for the desperately depressed, suicide is not a private act. Too many people around them may be affected directly or indirectly as a result. I'd like to know why it pertains to those with too STRONG of social ties; maybe their best few friends disappeared or deserted them?
I believe he would argue that it is because they are too connected and when change occurs it causes excessive amounts of stress which over time becomes overwhelming.
